I can’t think of a more delightful way to spend a public holiday then sat in a walled back garden, surrounded by friendly people and tall tiers of vegan high tea.

It was a bit of serendipity by which we came to hear of the event. While attending the Huglett’s Wood open day in May we came across one of the stands there was selling the most amazing vegan cupcakes. They were so good we not only gobbled a few on the day, but ended up taking away a carry pack too. At the time there was a flyer for the vegan high tea in Hailsham, but it was only a week or so later that I got round to doing anything about it. And with not a moment to spare as the tickets were almost sold out!

The event was hosted by the Hailsham Vegans, an active group who organise vegan events together with a fabulous chef, Krishna Mutty. Their events raise money for animal causes too, which really is the icing on the cake…and yes, cake pun intended 😉

When we arrived and entered the small walled garden I instantly felt transported back to a post-war England. There was a hum in the air, laughter, tinkling tea cups and optimism. As we walked across to our table soft, swinging tunes lapped over us.

For the next few hours we delighted in fingers sandwiches (no crusts!), minature wraps, scones, cupcakes and more. Here’s the day in pictures…try not to drool…

All was washed down by a few cups of strong tea, accompanied by the lovely purring voice of Miss Holiday Swing singing vintage tunes. My toes were tapping with every beat (no doubt fuelled by the sugar) and I even had a couple of “jazz hands” moments at the table much to my husband’s amusement.

What a fantastic day…and the event raised £153 for the Huglett’s Wood animal sanctuary, fantastic!

If you are in the area the next event is Sunday 25 September 2016 in Hailsham, click here for more details.
